The Table of Showbread was placed in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple in Jerusalem exactly opposite to the Menorah (the lampstand).
The name of this sacred vessel in the original Hebrew is ‘Shulchan Lechem Ha-Panim’.{שולחן לחם הפנים} The Hebrew word for ‘table’ is ‘Shulchan'{שולחן} (also in Modern Hebrew) and the English translation for the Hebrew word ‘Ha-Panim’ {הפנים} is usually – in Modern English – ‘the Bread of the Presence’, as can be seen in the following example:
“”And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before me regularly.” (Exodus 25:30)
In the original Hebrew the word ‘Presence’ appears as ‘Panim’ {פנים} and it is actually means ‘face’. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for ‘before me’ (‘Le-fana’ay’ {לפני} in Hebrew) shares the same root as the word ‘Panim’ and literally means ‘before my face’.
That is the reason for choosing the word ‘Presence’ in the English translation – meaning ‘the bread that should be always in the Presence (face) of God’.
